As most of my friends know, I’m a closet geek and proud about (just as long as I don’t have to admit it in public). I’ve been laid up for a while in bed due to illness so I’m really bored out of mind.
Because I’m sick, I’m about science and technology (my version of ‘em anyway). I’ve listed some interesting things I’ve been thinking about these past few days that may be of interest to some. So here goes:
- Encyclopedia of Life – With 1.8 million species of life on Earth, EOL is creating the “most complete biodiversity database on the Web”. This kind of global effort has never been attempted before and it will take a lot of effort to get it done. Funding has been secured for most part but there is still much we, the people who will benefit from this effort, can do to contribute. Please consider helping.
- A Great Leap…Forward? – In honor of Leap Day and the upcoming Daylight Savings Time, here’s an article that will really spin you on your axis.
- Black man vs. white woman – a mix of my interest in politics with my love for science. This article suggests “that the American mind treats race and gender quite differently. Race can evoke more visceral, negative associations, … but attitudes toward women are more inflexible and … ultimately more limiting.” Read on to learn more – you know you’re interested.
- WaPo spouts some hooey about sex differences – this discussion shows you why you can’t believe everything you read in the paper, which could possibly invalidate the article I posted above from the Boston Globe.
- Can a Man Become a Magnet? – I was planning on seeing Michel Gondry’s new film, Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Mos Def this weekend but my health decided to reprioritize my weekend. In any case, here’s another mix of my interests: passion for films and love of science.
